Growing up as a Christian, I often felt out of place because of my interests. I loved punk rock music, BMX, going to hardcore shows, jumping into mosh pits, and living a rock 'n' roll lifestyle. If you had told me back then that I’d one day be involved in a ministry, I’m not sure I would’ve believed you. Yet here I am, running a streetwear brand for action sports enthusiasts, trying to create a safe space for people just like me.
When I first joined this community, I had no idea that something like Skate Church even existed.
A Skate Church is a group of kids who gather at the skate park, share meals, and talk about God. These are skater punks like me, the ones who, growing up, might’ve felt like outcasts. But the difference between them and me? They had someone to lead them to Jesus.
Skate Churches are popping up all over the country, and it’s so important for people like me—who felt like they didn’t fit in at a traditional church—to know that there are communities out there for us. Skate parks can be a place where kids like us can not only skate but also feel the love of Jesus.
Jesus loves this community, and there are countless ministries across the nation that are doing amazing work. A few examples include Truth Skate Church, founded by Kyle Brush, and Battleground Skate Church in Battle Creek, Michigan. There’s also Forgiven Skate Church in Oklahoma, and many more like them.
The goal of this blog is simple: to shine a light on Skate Church, to let skaters know that Jesus loves them, and to help them find a community that shares their passions. Below, I’ve included links to some of these Skate Churches where you can get connected to a group that loves to shred and loves Jesus too.
